Granite Countertops

About Granite

Granite is defined as a feldspar-bearing igneous rock primarily made up of quartz and mica. It has a coarse grain made up entirely of crystals. Granite is a natural material found in nature and harvested from the earth in quarries. It is first extracted in the form of large blocks before being sliced into large slabs. It is then formed into useable shapes and sizes and finished off in a variety of ways to expose the natural beauty of the material. Due to its large combination of colours and patterns, every piece of granite is entirely unique. This is one primary appeal of the use of granite.  Granite is a natural product which means there are natural formations. Granite can have pitting and fissures based on how the stone is formed.

Granite Benefits

Scratch Resistance

Its resistance to scratching is appealing in places where coarse, heavy and sharp instruments are in use such as kitchens. In theory, you can cut on it but this is not recommended as it can leave your knife blunt and metal residues behind. Instead, consider using a designated granite cutting board. Granite rocks Ltd can supply these too.

Stain Resistance

Granite is stain resistant as liquids cannot penetrate its surface (when sealed). This is because the sealant applied to the granite prior to installation makes it a non-porous material. The lack of pores prevents anything remaining in the granite when it is cleaned. This means germs and mold cannot remain in the pores like they can in porous surfaces.

Hygienic & Natural

As Granite is a natural material, it contains no harmful chemicals, and does not emit harmful gases or radiation.

Longevity

Its longevity is almost infinite. After all, we are talking about Granite rock. Left undisturbed, it would last forever. With proper care and maintenance, it will likely outlast it’s owner.

Custom Shaping

As it can be shaped by suppliers of Granite like Granite Rocks Ltd., it can theoretically be custom designed for your application with a variety of edges and be formed around any object.

  • Hidden Seams – It is common to have an angle in granite in L or U shaped applications. This usually requires the use of separate pieces of granite. Where the two pieces join can be sealed with a custom coloured epoxy that makes the seams almost invisible meaning granite can take just about any orientation you require.

  • Sink Incorporation – As granite is cut to fit your requirement, it can allow an opening to accommodate a sink that is mounted into the granite or a sink mounted underneath the granite allowing a seamless flow into the sink. Sink shape and material are not an issue.

Colour Variety

Although granite does not have the widest range of colours out of available countertops materials, there are still a large range of options. Also, each piece will have it’s unique characteristics. The variation in finishes/edge profiles and thicknesses contributes to variations in price also, meaning there is a granite for any budget.

Maintenance

Granite is a very low maintenance surface. This is primarily due to its high resistance to scratching and absorbance of liquids. Simple mild household soaps will clean just about anything off the surface bringing the granite back to its original condition. To ensure this ease remains, have your granite resealed by Granite Rocks Ltd.

Heat Resistance

It’s resistance to heat/scorch is also beneficial in kitchens and other settings where hot objects/instruments are used such as vanity tops. Granite will not blister or melt after heat exposure and are one of the most heat resistant countertops on the market. It is still recommended to use a heat resistant object to set a hot item on but if you forget, it is unlikely to do any harm.

Granite Things To Consider

Consistency

Because of its wildy natural characheristics. The stone itself can look different in color and pattern from one part to another.

Annual Resealing

Annual resealing of granite maintains its resistive properties and preserves its aesthetics, however, the repetition of this process could be considered a downside.

Application of Granite

Kitchen

Granite Countertops are ideal for use in the kitchen. Providing a hygienic surface for food preparation plus the durability, heat resistance and scratch resistance that comes naturally in granite, it is the ideal choice for kitchen surfaces. Hot cooking instruments and sharp kitchen utensils put granite to the test daily. Simple clean up is also a huge benefit as we all know the kitchen can be a busy place. Spills are easy to clean and stains are avoided when using granite.

Bathroom

Another ideal place for using granite countertops is bathrooms. In these moisture rich environments, the non-porous moisture resistance of granite keeps liquids at the surface in addition to making drying the surfaces simple. This is also a benefit for keeping mildew at the surface and facilitating it’s easy removal. Using granite in Lethbridge bathrooms allows easy to clean surfaces ensuring hygienic and safe surfaces.  Not only can granite be used on vanity countertops, it can also be used around bathtubs and many other uses.

Top 5 Most Frequently Asked Questions

What is your warranty on installations?

Simply stated, we stand behind what we do. We’re going to warrant your seam forever- the same goes for undermount sinks. Our warranty is not protecting the people who regret their design or style choices. But when it comes to the work , were going to stand behind it. How do I care for my granite or quartz countertops?

Quartz is a low maintenance countertop, unlike granite which typically requires a new protective top coat at least once a year which is roughly a 45 min process. These surfaces never need to be sealed, unlike some natural stone options. When doing daily cleaning of quartz and granite a mild dish soap and water with a microfibre cloth is all that is needed.

Can I put hot things on quartz or cut on the surface?

Quartz is better at resisting heat in comparison to laminate surfaces like Formica, but when compared to granite or other stone countertops, quartz is not as heat resistant and care should be used. The resin component of the Quartz surfaces makes it vulnerable to direct heat like placing hot pans directly from the oven etc. Trivets and hot pads should be used for hot pans or hot hair tools in the bathroom to keep quartz looking its best.

Quartz is among the most durable counter surfaces you can purchase, and they are scratch resistant under normal usage. It is not indestructible, as any surface can be damaged with extreme abuse, however quartz is durable and withstands well in normal usage. To keep its shine and luster, a cutting board is recommended when using knives.

Does granite vary in colour compared to the sample I see in your showroom or online?

Yes, Granite does vary in colour and pattern as it is a natural stone. As they mine the granite and cut further into the Mountain the granite will begin to change pattern and colour.

Can granite or quartz be repaired if damaged?

Depending on the damage. We can repair chips very effectively. Scratches and cracks are much more difficult to repair if at all. Scratches are difficult mostly due to that fact that the surface needs to be polished to remove it from the surface. A deeper scratch can be filled but if linear it is possible that it will not completely fade away. Cracks happen due to stress on the counter and follow either natural fissure lines in the stone or natural places where the tension would release based on the minerals involved. This can also be repaired and filled, however it may not completely fade away and may still be noticeable depending on the stone.
